About
Sophie La Maitre (b. 1994) is a multidisciplinary artist with a deep fascination for the unremarkable and unnoticed, pursuing a more intense engagement with the material ephemera that are enveloped within our daily life. Working in relation to the site and within it, La Maitre investigates what it is that makes the places we inhabit familiar, and how best to re-present her own familiarity and understanding of these environments to the viewer. Through an intimate, almost museological treatment of discarded objects, La Maitre brings the flotsam and jetsam of the periphery into the foreground, reminding us that the mundane can also be precious.
